What impacts do covering tragedy and violence have on journalists, especially in an era of increased mass shootings, domestic terrorism, and natural disasters? How do shrinking newsrooms, public distrust of the media, and  “enemy of the people” accusations exacerbate the strain? More journalists have begun talking openly about the emotional impact of their work and the stress associated with the profession. This session will explore what this new landscape means for journalists, including freelance journalists who operate outside of any formal company structure or safety net. We'll identify symptoms of burnout and secondary traumatic stress and explore resources for mental health and wellbeing.
