In the newspaper business, we're trained to disappear -- to reel off the relevant facts, assume the oracular voice of authority, or serve as a clear pane of glass through which the reader can see what we are seeing. But in some circumstances your presence is not just awkward; it changes everything. When do we insert ourselves in stories? And which voice is it? Ellen Barry will reference two pieces, a piece from 2017 called "How to Get Away With Murder in Small-Town India," and an as-yet-unknown podcast about her relationship with a mysterious hermit.
