How can we produce a short work pared to its essence without losing the essentials of character, conflict, and subtext? How do we write from the middle (or the end) rather than from the beginning, and how does the narrator provide all-important synthesis in a short piece? This session offers instructive and generative components. We’ll examine published micro, flash, and sudden pieces (300-1,000 words) and see what other writers have done. Then, based on a sequence of prompts, participants will draft a flash work of their own. Handouts include revision guidelines and a list of places to submit finished pieces.
